Clothing matters

DO YOU CARE WHAT OTHERS THINK OF YOUR STYLE?

Do you look at pictures of yourself from many years ago and cringe, or do you look on them with fond memories, marvelling at the person you were back then?

Our personal style changes through the years due to our own style development, major world fashion trends and a few other influences. “Personal style” aptly describes the concept and your style speaks volumes about you. It can proclaim loudly that you do not care a hoot about other people’s opinion of you and therefor you dress in whatever you want. Most of us do care, albeit not to the same extent.

I do care to reflect that I am a woman who at this stage of my life know who I am and what I want or don’t want. I want to reflect that I am respectful of myself as well as to my fellow human beings. I also want to look like I keep up with the world around me by adapting some fashion trends to my personal style. The way you dress does send a message to the world and it is up to you to decide what that message is.

It is widely accepted that there is a link between personal style and identity. Your best look is the most authentic one, so it make sense to choose clothes that resonate with you. Size, age and money doesn’t matter. Gone are the days that women were required to dress "for a certain age".

A few months ago, I published a blog on trending fashions for Spring and Summer 2021/2022. Colour trends we will see in 2022, include Fuchsia, Blue, Yellow as well as Autumn shades. Below are a dozen more trends for you to explore.

1. Gingham is still trending.

2. High waisted and bare waisted proof to be popular.

3. All White is a perennial favourite.

4. Pleated skirts. These are paired with a simple t-shirt, white button-down and even warmer tops for cooler weather.

5. Loungewear, even though there were predictions of its fashion demise, we are not yet ready to let go.

6. Clever colour blocking with bold colours.

7. Active wear for everyday wear.

8. Trading leopard- and snake prints for zebra and tiger prints. Keep an eye out for abstract versions.

9. Avant-Garde: Impressionistic prints, creative cut-outs and architectural jewellery. Apparently, we can retire the thin layering gold chains-style, or layer them with something wow worthy.

10. Footwear: Loafers are updated with fresh colours, bold hardware and platforms. Ballet flats are making a comeback with square toes and also statement hardware. Tech shoes, similar to a rain boot or a clog with sporty utility elements like rubber, straps and futuristic silhouettes.

11. High glam metallics, feathers and lingerie-inspired looks (corsets, lace-ups details and suggestive silhouettes) for nights out.

12. Personalization of items by means of adding personal interest motifs or charms on a hat or handbag. Buying from smaller designers and independent shops rather than chain stores, can also help to personalise your style.

Coming to the end of 2021 after two difficult years, we need to dig deep to find joy and peace on earth. Last week I posted the story of Achmat who did not let circumstances dictate his view of life. Good things can turn bad and bad things can turn out good.

May we all follow our own North star and find resilience to get on with life and all of its challenges.

Till we chat again, enjoy the holidays.
